AEO vs GEO vs SEO: What Actually Changes for Shopify Stores in 2026

SEO, AEO, and GEO get used almost interchangeably in most marketing content, and that's a problem, because they optimize for three different outcomes. SEO optimizes for search rankings. AEO optimizes for being selected as the direct answer to a question. GEO optimizes for being the brand an AI recommends or cites when it's generating a response. A Shopify store can win at one of these and be nearly invisible at the other two. Here's exactly what separates them, and where most brands are leaving the biggest gap.

The three disciplines, defined

  • SEO (Search Engine Optimization) — the technical and content foundation for ranking in classic search results: crawlability, structured data, page experience, content relevance.
  • AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) — optimizing to be selected as the direct answer inside featured snippets, knowledge panels, and AI Overviews. This is about answer selection.
  • GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) — optimizing to be cited or recommended inside generative AI responses from ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Claude when a shopper asks an open-ended question. This is about AI citation.

SEO is the foundation all three sit on — a store that isn't reliably crawled and indexed won't be cited reliably by AEO or GEO either.

The stat most Shopify brands miss: GEO is a third-party game

This is the single most important thing to understand about GEO, and it's the opposite of how SEO works: roughly 85% of brand mentions in AI search originate from third-party pages, not brand-owned sites. Your own product pages and blog matter, but they're not where most of your AI visibility actually gets built. Reddit threads, comparison sites, review platforms, and independent editorial content are doing more work for your GEO presence than your own site is.

The practical implication: a GEO strategy that only optimizes carryup.in-style owned pages is missing the majority of the opportunity. Genuine reviews, category comparisons written by independent sources, and community discussion of your product all feed AI citation in ways your own product description never will.

Each AI platform cites differently — know the pattern

This is where a generic "be good at content" strategy falls short — the platforms have measurably different citation preferences:

  • ChatGPT favors authoritative, long-form, encyclopedic content — Wikipedia alone accounts for roughly 47.9% of its top citations. Deep, well-structured, comprehensive pages outperform short marketing copy.
  • Perplexity favors fresh, well-cited, community-driven content — Reddit accounts for roughly 46.7% of its sourced material, and it consistently prioritizes original data and recent publication dates over evergreen authority.
  • Only about 11% of domains are cited by both ChatGPT and Perplexity — meaning a strategy built around ranking in Google alone is very likely optimizing for neither AI platform specifically.

Google's own AI Mode and AI Overviews sit closer to traditional SEO signals but pull heavily from platforms like Yelp and Facebook for local and reviews-driven queries — a different pattern again.

What actually moves the needle on AEO and GEO

  • Proper schema markup — FAQPage, Article, and Organization schema in particular. Even where a schema type no longer produces a visible rich result in classic Search, AI systems still use it to extract and verify facts.
  • Direct, concise answers — 50–60 word answers to specific questions, in plain conversational language, consistently outperform marketing prose for citation purposes.
  • Genuine third-party presence — reviews, community discussion, and independent comparison content, since GEO is disproportionately a third-party signal rather than an owned-content one.
  • Freshness — content that's actually maintained and updated is measurably more likely to be cited than content that's technically still accurate but visibly dated.
  • A sound SEO foundation underneath all of it — crawlability, site structure, and page experience remain the floor everything else is built on.

Common mistakes

Treating AEO/GEO as a replacement for SEO. They're an additional layer, not a substitute — a technically broken store won't be cited reliably regardless of how well-written its FAQ content is.

Only optimizing owned content. Given that roughly 85% of AI brand mentions come from third-party sources, ignoring reviews, community presence, and independent coverage leaves the majority of GEO opportunity on the table.

Writing the same content for every AI platform. ChatGPT's encyclopedic bias and Perplexity's community/freshness bias reward genuinely different content shapes — a single one-size-fits-all piece won't perform equally well on both.

Ignoring FAQ schema because it lost its classic rich-result. Google removed FAQ rich results from standard Search results in May 2026, but FAQ schema remains valuable for AI systems (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Google AI Overviews) that still rely on it for extraction — dropping it because the visual snippet disappeared is a mistake.

FAQs

What is the difference between SEO, AEO, and GEO? SEO optimizes for search rankings, AEO optimizes for being selected as a direct answer (featured snippets, AI Overviews), and GEO optimizes for being cited or recommended inside generative AI responses like ChatGPT and Perplexity.

Is GEO more important than SEO now? No — GEO and AEO are built on top of a sound SEO foundation, not instead of it. A store that isn't reliably crawled and indexed won't be cited reliably by AI systems either.

Why does third-party content matter so much for GEO? Because roughly 85% of brand mentions in AI search originate from third-party pages rather than brand-owned sites — reviews, community discussion, and independent comparisons carry more GEO weight than most brands assume.

Do ChatGPT and Perplexity cite the same sources? Rarely — only about 11% of domains are cited by both, since ChatGPT favors long-form encyclopedic authority (Wikipedia especially) while Perplexity favors fresh, community-driven sources like Reddit.

Is FAQ schema still worth using if it lost its Google rich result? Yes — it lost its classic visual snippet in Search as of May 2026, but AI systems including ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, and Google AI Overviews still use FAQ schema to extract and cite answers.

Our take

Most Shopify brands we audit are investing entirely in SEO, a little in AEO, and almost nothing in GEO — which means the fastest-growing share of how customers now discover products is the one getting the least deliberate attention. None of these three disciplines replace each other, and none of them work in isolation from a sound technical foundation.
