Shopify Fall '26 Edition Explained: Every Major Update, What Matters and How to Use It

The Shopify Fall '26 Edition went live on October 28, 2026 with more than 150 updates across AI, agentic commerce, the online store, checkout, payments, POS, marketing, shipping and developer tools. The short version: Shopify wants your store to sell everywhere a shopper might ask for something, including ChatGPT, Gemini, Google AI Mode, Claude and Meta's Muse, while Sidekick and the new Canvas editor take on more of the work of running the store. Most of the 150+ updates can wait. About ten of them are worth acting on before Black Friday, and a few come with real deadlines. This guide explains every major Shopify Fall '26 Edition feature in plain English: what it is, why it matters, and step by step how to use it. Everything here comes from Shopify's own Edition pages and announcements, and we say clearly where something is in early access, coming soon, or limited to certain countries.

Shopify Fall '26 Edition at a glance

  • Release date: October 28, 2026
  • Size: 150+ updates, Shopify's twice-yearly product release (the previous one was the Spring '26 Edition)
  • Theme: the Shopify network. Shopify's VP of Product, Vanessa Lee, put it this way: "Every merchant that joins Shopify benefits from every other merchant that has ever been on Shopify."

The 10 Shopify Fall '26 updates that really matter

Ranked by how much they change day-to-day selling for a typical Shopify store:

  • Agent knowledge base and Catalog eligibility: you now control the facts AI shopping agents are told about your store, and you can see whether your products qualify for Shopify Catalog, the product feed agents shop from.
  • Shop Pay inside AI agents and Shop.md: shoppers can buy from Shopify stores inside personal AI agents and any agent that uses the Shop.md skill, with the order landing in your admin like any other sale.
  • Selling in Google Search, AI Mode and the Gemini app: with checkout powered by Shopify.
  • The rebuilt Shopify Sidekick: it now writes code, runs calculations, searches the web, remembers what you teach it and applies multiple changes at once after you approve them.
  • Canvas: a new visual editor that shows your whole store in one view and lets you edit it with Sidekick. Early access for now.
  • Shopify Protect: fraud blocking before payment, AI-written chargeback responses and a Rule Builder app, for stores on Shopify Payments.
  • Campaign Autopilot for every merchant: AI-run campaigns, now with Microsoft Advertising, Snapchat and SEO, and X Ads coming.
  • Rollouts: schedule launches and A/B test changes to themes, checkout, discounts and catalog prices, with automatic rollback.
  • WebMCP: every Liquid and Hydrogen store is agent-ready by default, so browser agents can search, add to cart and check out.
  • New theme architecture and the script tag shutdown: a big change for developers, and a reason to check older apps on your store.

What is agentic commerce? A plain-English explanation

Agentic commerce means an AI agent does some or all of the shopping for a person. Instead of searching Google, opening ten tabs and comparing products, a shopper asks ChatGPT, Gemini or another assistant something like "find me a linen shirt under ₹3,000 that ships to Pune by Friday", and the agent searches, compares and can even complete the purchase.

For a Shopify merchant, three questions decide whether you get those sales:

  • Can the agent find your products? That depends on Shopify Catalog, your product data and your structured data.
  • Does the agent trust what it knows about you? Return windows, shipping destinations and policies, now managed in the new knowledge base.
  • Can the agent check out? Shop Pay, Universal Checkout and WebMCP handle this part.

Shopify's own view, from Vanessa Lee: "For buyers, checkout is important, but not nearly as important as discovery." In other words, the work that pays off is making your products easy for agents to find and understand. And for anyone worried about losing customers to AI: "The order is still the merchant's. The customer relationship is still the merchant's." Orders from AI channels arrive in your admin with the customer's name, email and shipping details.

If you want the background on how AI answer engines pick brands, our guides to agentic checkout and AEO vs GEO vs SEO cover it in depth.

1. The agent knowledge base and Catalog eligibility

What it is: Two new tools in the Shopify admin. The Catalog eligibility view shows whether your store qualifies for Shopify Catalog and links to fixes for anything in the way. The knowledge base, a new page at Sales channels > Agentic, lets you review and publish the facts AI agents get about your store: return windows, shipping destinations, gift services and similar details. It holds up to 1,000 facts.

Why it matters: ChatGPT, Copilot, Meta, Instinct and other AI agents get product information from Shopify Catalog. If your store isn't eligible, those agents can't recommend you, no matter how good your products are. Shopify drafts facts from your storefront, but agents only receive facts you have published, so nothing reaches an agent without your sign-off.

How to use it:

  • Open the Catalog eligibility view in your admin and fix every issue it lists. Common blockers are missing product data, policy gaps and store setup issues.
  • Go to Sales channels > Agentic and open the knowledge base.
  • Review every fact Shopify drafted from your storefront. Correct anything inaccurate before you publish it. An agent repeating a wrong return window is worse than saying nothing.
  • Add the facts shoppers ask about most: return and exchange window, delivery times by region, COD availability, warranty, sizing guidance, gift wrapping and international shipping.
  • Revisit the knowledge base every time a policy changes, especially before sale periods.

Deadline: the old standalone Knowledge Base app stops being available on January 15, 2027. If you used it, move the facts you want into the built-in knowledge base before then. If you had more than 1,000 facts, pick the ones that matter most.

2. Shop.md, Shop Pay in AI agents and Universal Checkout

What it is: Three ways shoppers can now buy from Shopify stores outside your website.

  • Shop.md is a shopping skill that turns any AI agent, such as ChatGPT or Claude, into a personal shopper. It can search more than a billion products, check out with Shop Pay and track orders. Anyone can customise the skill.
  • Shop Pay in personal AI agents starts with Muse from Meta, Claude Duet and Instinct. Claude Duet, Grok Bot and Instinct also offer Shop Pay for brands that are not on Shopify. The shopper's card is never shared with the agent, and agent purchases use tokens from Mastercard, Visa and Discover, with American Express coming soon.
  • Universal Checkout on Shop gives shoppers one checkout in the Shop app for a cart built from several merchants, while still respecting each merchant's checkout extensions and validations. Shop also has a new home on the web, Shop.com.

Why it matters: More than 400 million people already use Shop Pay. When an agent knows a shopper's sizes, preferences and order history from Shop, it can match them to your products and complete the purchase in one step. You don't need to switch Shop Pay on separately for these agents.

How to use it:

  • Make sure Shop Pay is active in Settings > Payments. Shop Pay availability depends on your country and payment setup.
  • Treat your product data as your sales pitch to agents: clear titles, complete descriptions, accurate variants, prices and stock, and good images.
  • Connect Instagram to Shop so your reels, images and carousels sync as shoppable content in the Shop app.
  • Keep your store branding up to date. It now syncs to Shop automatically.

3. Sell in Google AI Mode and Gemini, and manage your store from ChatGPT

What it is: Two separate things that are easy to mix up.

  • Selling in AI channels: merchants can sell in Google Search, including AI Mode, and in the Gemini app, with checkout powered by Shopify. Shoppers buy in the chat and you manage the orders in your admin.
  • Shopify connectors for AI agents: you can connect your store to the AI tools you already use and run it from there. Connectors now work with nine agents: ChatGPT, Claude, Claude Duet, Microsoft Copilot, Google Gemini, Grok, Grok Bot, Muse and Perplexity. You can pin Shopify to the ChatGPT sidebar to see sales, sessions and conversion rate, and add or search products. Copilot connects your store alongside Outlook, Word and Excel.

Why it matters: The first brings you new customers. The second saves you time: checking yesterday's sales, updating inventory or drafting product copy can happen in the chat you already have open.

How to use it:

  • Check the AI channel settings in your admin to see which selling channels are available for your store and country.
  • Connect Shopify to the assistant your team actually uses every day. Start with read-only questions such as "what were my top five products last week?" before you let it change anything.
  • Decide who on the team is allowed to make changes through a connector, the same way you manage staff permissions.

4. WebMCP and UCP: every Shopify store is now agent-ready

What it is: WebMCP is a set of tools built into every Liquid and Hydrogen storefront and checkout. It exposes structured data so browser-based AI agents can search your products, update the cart and complete checkout once the buyer approves, with the same validation as your normal checkout. Shopify says it has been rolling out since August and agent support is currently limited to Chromium-based browsers.

The Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) adds two developer endpoints: /buy creates cart and checkout links that include products, customer details, discounts and order attribution, and /ask answers questions about a store, grounded in the facts the business has published. Agents can also surface your retail locations through UCP.

Why it matters: Agents get clean data instead of reading screenshots and guessing where to click, so they shop your store faster and more reliably. It is on by default, so you don't need to install anything.

How to use it:

  • You don't need to switch anything on. Your part is making sure the data agents read is complete and correct.
  • Fix structured data gaps such as missing prices, availability, SKUs, GTINs and brand. Our free Shopify audit checks these on your live store in under a minute.
  • Keep your knowledge base facts published and accurate, because /ask answers from them.
  • If you run a heavily customised theme or headless build, ask your developer to test the add-to-cart and checkout flow with a Chromium-based browser agent.

5. The rebuilt Shopify Sidekick: what it can do now

What it is: Sidekick, Shopify's built-in AI assistant, has been rebuilt. It can now write code, run calculations, search the internet and remember what you teach it. It can make a plan, wait for one approval, and apply several changes at once, such as rewriting descriptions for every product in a collection. It can also create and edit draft orders, create print-on-demand products from a design, and give guidance on more parts of your store. It sits as a floating chat at the bottom of every page in the redesigned admin. Shopify says daily Sidekick sessions have grown 4.2x year over year.

Sidekick's recommendations are now tested in SimGym, Shopify's shopper simulation tool, and your admin home shows personalised recommendations and next steps. Developers can add markdown files that teach Sidekick how your theme is built and save your design preferences.

Why it matters: Jobs that used to need a developer, an analyst or a spare afternoon, such as a metafield change, a margin calculation or competitor research, can now be a conversation. You still approve every change before it goes live.

How to use it: Open Sidekick from the floating prompt and try prompts like these:

  • "Rewrite the descriptions for every product in my Summer collection in a warmer tone, under 120 words each, and show me the plan first."
  • "Calculate my average order value and gross margin by product type for the last 90 days."
  • "Research what three competitors charge for similar products and summarise it in a table."
  • "Create a draft order for this customer with a 10% discount and free shipping."
  • "What's broken or missing on my store that's costing me sales?"

For a deeper walkthrough, see our complete guide to Shopify Sidekick.

6. Shopify Canvas: edit your whole store in one view

What it is: Canvas is a new way to design a Shopify store. You see the entire store on one canvas, zoom into any detail, and edit with Sidekick, from small tweaks to full redesigns. Everything is built on your theme's design system. Canvas is in early access, and Shopify has said it isn't replacing the existing theme editor yet. Shopify reports that stores go from no theme to launched 20% faster with Canvas.

Why it matters: Theme settings have always limited what a non-technical founder can change. Canvas lets you describe what you want and see it applied across the store, without learning code or a new tool.

How to use it:

  • Check your admin for an early access invite. Until it reaches you, keep using the theme editor as normal.
  • Work on a duplicate theme first, never on the live one.
  • Be specific in prompts: "make the product page image gallery full width on mobile and move reviews above the description" works better than "make it look premium".
  • Keep brand rules (colours, fonts, tone) in Sidekick's memory so every edit stays on brand.
  • Themes built on Shopify's new theme architecture are ready for Canvas editing. Older or heavily customised themes may need developer work to get the most from it.

7. The redesigned Shopify admin, passkeys and auto-generated policies

What it is: The Shopify admin has a full visual refresh with new colours, type, spacing and icons, plus a collapsible side navigation that holds search, notifications and the store picker. Alongside it:

  • Passkeys for faster, more secure sign-in.
  • Folders to organise files.
  • Auto-generated store policies for returns, contact, shipping and terms of service that stay in sync when you edit your settings.
  • Inline metafield editing on any admin page.
  • An activity log that shows changes across the store with the staff member, app or service behind each one. Coming soon.

How to use it:

  • Set up a passkey for every staff account. It is one of the easiest security wins available.
  • Generate the auto-synced policies if yours are outdated or copied from a template. Read them before publishing.
  • Organise your files into folders before the Black Friday creative rush.

8. Rollouts: schedule launches and A/B test with automatic rollback

What it is: Rollouts let you schedule changes or run A/B tests on parts of your store, now across headless builds, Shopify POS, Google Shopping and the Shop app. You can roll out discounts alongside coordinated theme and checkout changes, and schedule price and publishing changes as catalogs across markets, with automatic rollback when the promotion ends.

Related updates: you can set a shopping goal for your next SimGym simulation and get recommendations with a visual of where to apply them, and predictive search suggestions have improved, with Shopify reporting an 8% lift in add-to-carts from search.

Why it matters: Sale launches are where stores break: a price that didn't revert, a banner that stayed up, a discount that went live early. Scheduling everything as one rollout with automatic rollback removes most of that risk.

How to use it:

  • Build your Black Friday sale as a single rollout: theme changes, discount and catalog prices together, scheduled to start and end automatically.
  • Use A/B tests for one change at a time, such as a new product page layout, and give each test enough traffic to reach a real result. Our guide to A/B testing mistakes on Shopify explains how.
  • Run a SimGym simulation on your key pages before big traffic arrives.

9. Shopify Protect and the Rule Builder: stop fraud and win chargebacks

What it is: Shopify Protect is a set of fraud and dispute tools for stores on Shopify Payments:

  • Shopify automatically blocks high-risk orders before payment is authorised at checkout.
  • On unauthorised chargebacks, Shopify provides the card, receipt and authentication data that proves the customer made the purchase.
  • You get AI-generated responses for every chargeback, written for the customer's bank and the reason code. Shopify says merchants have seen up to 1.6x higher dispute win rates by category.
  • A clear view of the fraud being prevented, right in your admin.

The Shopify Protect Rule Builder is a separate app. It is free to install, then costs $0.07 USD per screened transaction. You can write rules on the risk signals you choose to block a payment, request 3D Secure or hold an order, and backtest each rule against the last 90 days before switching it on.

Why it matters: Signals from millions of businesses feed Shopify's defences, so a card flagged at one store is already known at the next. Shopify says Shopify Payments prevents more than 12,000 high-risk payments every minute, at no extra cost to businesses using it.

How to use it:

  • If you're on Shopify Payments, the core protection is already on. Open the Protect view in your admin to see what it's catching.
  • Respond to every chargeback using the AI-generated draft, and check the evidence before you submit.
  • Only install the Rule Builder if you have a specific fraud pattern, such as repeated high-value orders to one address. Backtest first, because a strict rule can block real customers.

10. Campaign Autopilot and the marketing updates

What it is: Campaign Autopilot uses AI to run ad campaigns, and in this Edition Shopify rolled it out to every merchant. It adds Microsoft Advertising and Snapchat, with X Ads coming soon, and now covers SEO too. You set the budget, approve everything before it goes live, and can change it at any time.

Other marketing updates:

  • Shop Campaigns in more than 35 new markets.
  • Unified marketing reports across channels.
  • WhatsApp marketing consent collected at checkout.
  • A ready-made Black Friday email campaign in Shopify Messaging that you can preview, customise, approve and schedule.
  • TikTok Buy Direct ads for select businesses, with checkout powered by Shopify.
  • A ChatGPT Ads app for sponsored placements in chats, with reporting in your admin.
  • Shop Promise (US only) shows delivery and returns badges on eligible products, can help them rank higher in Shop and in Shopify Catalog data that shopping agents use, and eligibility has grown 20x. The updated programme drops the old $5 late credit, and older orders can be claimed until December 16, 2026.

How to use it:

  • Turn on WhatsApp consent at checkout now. Every Black Friday buyer who opts in is someone you can reach again on the channel with the highest open rates. Our WhatsApp marketing guide covers what to send.
  • Try Campaign Autopilot with a small, fixed test budget on one channel, compare it with your manual campaigns, then decide.
  • Schedule the Shopify Messaging Black Friday campaign early, and use our Black Friday Shopify checklist for the rest.

Checkout updates in the Fall '26 Edition

Several checkout changes are labelled coming soon, so plan for them rather than look for them today:

  • Custom fields in the checkout and accounts editor, so you can collect information like a gift message or GST number without an app.
  • A simpler layout for payment methods in checkout.
  • A celebration animation on the thank-you page.
  • Apple Pay in Chrome, Edge, Firefox and other browsers, by scanning a QR code with an iPhone.
  • A tighter, stacked form layout that reduces scrolling and makes field errors easier to fix.
  • Return and cancellation requests by market, controlled in the checkout editor.

How to use it: If you pay for an app only to add a field to checkout, note it and review it once custom fields arrive. Our Shopify checkout optimisation guide covers the changes that move conversion most.

Payments, international selling and shipping

  • Seven new local payment methods in Shopify Payments: Alipay, WeChat Pay, MB WAY, OXXO, Satispay, Scalapay and GrabPay. All work in online checkout, and most also work with Shop Pay, the Shop app and Shopify POS.
  • All-in prices and flat-rate shipping for international markets, so shoppers abroad see one clear price.
  • US sales tax by ship-from location in Shopify Tax, which stays accurate when you fulfil from more than one location.
  • DHL Express in more markets, plus shipping settings managed inside Markets.
  • Package dimensions per variant, with default packaging per item.
  • FedEx delivery photos on the order, useful evidence for "it never arrived" disputes.
  • Return and cancellation rules by market, including return window overrides for products and collections.
  • Automatic tax recalculation when you edit an order's shipping address.

How to use it: If you sell across borders, review your market settings and switch to all-in pricing where it fits. Add package dimensions to your heaviest and bulkiest variants first, since that's where shipping quotes go most wrong. For the wider setup, see our guide to Shopify international markets.

Products and catalogue management

  • Product data mapping by channel, so each sales channel gets the fields it needs.
  • Multi-source product collections, built from more than one rule or source.
  • Variants managed from the product page.
  • Up to 20 barcodes per variant, with format validation, scannable in Shopify POS.
  • Sell access by URL: add a URL to a product, set a price, and sell access to things like templates and bookings.
  • An improved Shopify Digital Products app.
  • Market cart previews to check how products, pricing, availability and checkout settings appear to customers in a specific market. Coming soon.

How to use it: Clean product data is now the foundation for both search and AI agents. Use channel mapping to stop compromising one channel's titles for another's, and fill in barcodes (GTINs) where you have them. If your catalogue is large, our guide to AI product content at scale shows how to fix descriptions without losing your brand voice.

Shopify POS updates for retail stores

  • Expanded in-store customer recognition: POS can now recognise more shoppers through Shopify's network of people who have checked out at stores powered by Shopify Payments. When a shopper chooses a digital receipt and agrees to share their details, the purchase is saved to a customer profile. Shopify says a known in-store customer has over 60% higher lifetime value than an unknown one.
  • Abandoned online carts in store: authorised staff can pull up a known customer's abandoned online cart and complete the sale at the counter.
  • POS smart grid with tiles tailored to how you sell.
  • Scheduled stock counts and recent carts saved across devices.
  • Customisable receipt templates, with automatic tax summaries for the EU, UK and Canada.
  • An activity log of refunds, returns, manual discounts and drawer opens by staff name.
  • Bulk staff management by CSV and device management in the admin, including revoking a lost device.
  • Faster checkout with fewer taps for cash and split payments.

How to use it: Train staff to offer the digital receipt on every sale, because that's how anonymous walk-ins become customers you can market to. Review the activity log weekly. Our Shopify POS omnichannel guide covers the full retail setup.

Analytics and Shopify Flow

  • Geospatial clustering and interactive maps in analytics.
  • App events in analytics: apps can send events, such as loyalty points redeemed or emails sent, so you can build custom reports alongside store data.
  • More accurate sessions with bot filtering, unified user journeys and consent-aware visit counting. Expect session counts to change, and conversion rates to look different, once bots are filtered out.
  • Shopify Flow triggers on field changes: run workflows when a product's price, tag, metafield or another field changes.
  • Build Flow automations with an AI agent through the AI Toolkit.
  • Flow version history, so you can preview, compare and restore earlier versions.

How to use it: Note the date the new session counting applies to your store so a jump in conversion rate isn't mistaken for a real improvement. Then set up one price-change Flow, for example a Slack or email alert whenever a price drops below a set margin. For more automation ideas, see AI automation for Shopify stores.

Shopify Fall '26 developer updates: theme architecture, Hydrogen and security

With 57 updates, developers got the biggest share of this Edition. The changes that matter most:

  • New theme architecture: page structure now lives in the Liquid template instead of a separate JSON file, with blocks, typed contracts, partial updates, markdown files that guide AI agents, and Tailwind styling built in. Themes built this way are ready for Canvas.
  • Per-page CSS: Shopify now delivers only the CSS each page actually uses, so pages load faster.
  • Hydrogen, rebuilt and generally available since October 14, 2026, works with any framework and runtime. Vercel Shop, an open source Next.js template built on the Hydrogen SDK, is also generally available. Background in our posts on headless Shopify and the Shopify and Vercel partnership.
  • Shop.dev: one connection to Shopify Catalog, Shop sign-in, cart, checkout and Shop Pay for any agent or app, with no key required. The Catalog API adds filters for 3D models and video, sale prices and safety warnings, can search products not on Shopify, and (in early access) pays developers the Shop Campaigns commission plus 0.3% from Shopify on sales they drive.
  • Checkout Kit, updated to embed Shopify checkout in web, native mobile and agentic experiences.
  • App security checks: a single Shopify CLI command in the AI Toolkit scans an app for common vulnerabilities, such as unauthenticated routes, cross-shop data access and unverified webhooks.
  • Script tags are finished: apps can no longer create or update script tags and must move to theme app extensions or web pixels.
  • Expiring tokens: public apps still using non-expiring offline tokens must migrate. More on the dates below.
  • Also new: IP allowlists per app, unique app names, Python and PHP app packages, 14 new Polaris component APIs, agent-friendly Shopify CLI commands, and store creation from the Stripe Projects CLI.

What merchants should do: ask whoever maintains your store whether any installed app still relies on script tags, and check that your key apps are ready for the token deadline. Our Shopify app audit guide is a good place to start.

What the Fall '26 Edition means for Indian Shopify stores

Not every update reaches every country, and Indian merchants should know where they stand:

  • Shopify Payments isn't available in India, so features that depend on it (Shopify Protect, the new local payment methods and POS customer recognition through the Shopify Payments network) don't apply to stores run from India today. Stores running a separate business entity in the UK, US or another supported country can use them there. Our guide to Shopify payment gateways in India explains the options.
  • Shop Promise is US only.
  • Five Indian languages are now supported: Bengali, Gujarati, Marathi, Tamil and Telugu are among 13 new languages, alongside right-to-left support for Arabic, Hebrew and Urdu. For brands selling across India, a regional-language storefront is now far easier to set up with Translate & Adapt.
  • WhatsApp consent at checkout matters more in India than almost anywhere else, given how central WhatsApp is to Indian D2C marketing.
  • Sidekick, Canvas, Rollouts, the redesigned admin, Flow and the agentic tools are platform features rather than payment features. Check your own admin for availability, since early access and rollouts vary.
  • For Indian brands selling abroad, all-in international prices, the knowledge base and Catalog eligibility are the updates most likely to win new customers in the US, UK, Middle East and Europe.

Key dates and deadlines from the Fall '26 Edition

  • November 2, 2026: the deprecated Global Catalog REST API stops serving traffic. This only matters if one of your apps still calls it.
  • November 27, 2026: Black Friday. Finish anything customer-facing well before this.
  • December 16, 2026: last day to claim the old $5 Shop Promise credit on orders placed before a store moved to the updated programme.
  • January 1, 2027: public apps still using non-expiring offline tokens are delisted and blocked from new installs. Existing installs keep working until April 1, 2027.
  • January 15, 2027: merchants using a public app that missed the token migration see a warning in the admin, and the standalone Knowledge Base app is no longer available.
  • April 1, 2027: existing installs of apps that never migrated to expiring tokens lose access to the affected APIs.

Your Shopify Fall '26 action plan: what to do this week

Not sure where your store stands? Run the free Shopify audit to check your structured data, AI readiness, speed and catalogue in about a minute.

Fall '26 vs Spring '26: what changed

The Spring '26 Edition opened agentic commerce to every developer and put Shopify stores into ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Mode. Fall '26 builds on that in three ways:

  • More places to sell: Shop Pay inside personal AI agents, Shop.md, Universal Checkout across merchants, Shop.com, and selling in Google AI Mode and Gemini.
  • More merchant control: the knowledge base, Catalog eligibility and Sidekick's approve-first plans give you a say in what AI does with your store.
  • More of the network's advantages: Shopify Protect, POS customer recognition and Campaign Autopilot all learn from patterns across millions of Shopify businesses, which no single store could build alone.

FAQs

When was the Shopify Fall '26 Edition released? Shopify released the Fall '26 Edition on October 28, 2026. It includes more than 150 updates across agentic commerce, Sidekick, the online store, checkout, payments, POS, marketing, shipping and developer tools.

What are the biggest new features in Shopify Fall '26? The most important are the agent knowledge base and Catalog eligibility view, Shop Pay inside personal AI agents and Shop.md, selling in Google AI Mode and Gemini, the rebuilt Sidekick, Canvas (early access), Shopify Protect, Campaign Autopilot for every merchant, Rollouts with automatic rollback, WebMCP and the new theme architecture.

What is Shopify Canvas? Canvas is a visual editor that shows your entire store in one view and lets you edit it with Sidekick, from small tweaks to full redesigns, built on your theme's design system. It is in early access and isn't replacing the existing theme editor yet.

What can the new Shopify Sidekick do? The rebuilt Sidekick can write code, run calculations, search the internet, remember what you teach it, apply several changes at once after one approval, and create or edit draft orders. It appears as a floating chat on every page of the redesigned admin.

What is Shop.md? Shop.md is a shopping skill that turns AI agents like ChatGPT or Claude into personal shoppers. It can search more than a billion products from Shopify merchants, check out with Shop Pay and track orders.

How do I get my Shopify store recommended by AI agents? Check the Catalog eligibility view in your admin and fix any issues, publish accurate facts in the knowledge base under Sales channels > Agentic, and keep product data and structured data complete: titles, descriptions, prices, availability, variants, barcodes and images.

Is Shopify Protect free? Shopify Protect's core fraud blocking and chargeback tools are included at no extra cost for stores on Shopify Payments. The separate Shopify Protect Rule Builder app is free to install, then costs $0.07 USD per screened transaction.

Do I lose the customer when someone buys through ChatGPT or another AI agent? No. According to Shopify, orders from AI channels land in your admin with the customer's name, email and shipping details, like any other sale. The order and the customer relationship stay yours.

Are the Fall '26 features available in India? Many are, including Sidekick, the redesigned admin, Rollouts, Flow, the new languages (Bengali, Gujarati, Marathi, Tamil and Telugu) and WhatsApp consent at checkout. Features that depend on Shopify Payments, such as Shopify Protect and the new local payment methods, don't apply to stores run from India because Shopify Payments isn't available there. Shop Promise is US only.

Do I need to do anything for WebMCP? No. WebMCP is on by default for Liquid and Hydrogen storefronts. Your job is to make sure the data agents read, your products, structured data and knowledge base facts, is complete and accurate.

What should Shopify developers do first? Move any app off script tags to theme app extensions or web pixels, migrate public apps to expiring offline tokens before January 1, 2027, stop using the Global Catalog REST API before November 2, 2026, and run the AI Toolkit security check on custom apps.

Our take

The Shopify Fall '26 Edition is less about any single feature and more about where shopping is heading: shoppers increasingly ask an AI agent and buy wherever the answer appears. The stores that win in that world are the ones with clean product data, accurate published facts and a fast, reliable checkout, which is exactly what most of these updates help with. Most of the 150+ updates can wait. Catalog eligibility, the knowledge base, WhatsApp consent, a scheduled Black Friday rollout and the developer deadlines can't. If you'd like help putting the Fall '26 Edition to work on your store, from AI and automation to custom development and ongoing support, our team in Bengaluru works with Shopify brands across India and around the world. Start with the free Shopify audit to see where your store stands today.
