Adding B2B and Wholesale to Your Shopify Store Without Breaking Your DTC Operation

If you've built a D2C brand with any traction, you've probably received inbound wholesale inquiries. Most D2C brands handle this awkwardly — email chains, custom invoices, honour system on pricing. Shopify's native B2B tooling, available on Shopify Plus, can handle it properly without a second platform.

The two-store vs. one-store decision for B2B

Shopify Plus's native B2B features make the one-store model genuinely workable now. You can create company profiles with custom net payment terms, assign specific price lists, hide wholesale pricing from public visitors, and manage wholesale orders through the same Shopify admin — see our full breakdown of when Plus is actually worth the cost if you're not on it yet.

The two-store approach is better if you have fundamentally different products for B2B (different pack sizes, unbranded variants), you want your wholesale team to have a completely separate portal, or your B2B business is large enough to justify the operational overhead.

Pricing architecture: the thing most brands get wrong

The most common B2B pricing mistake: giving wholesale customers a flat 40% discount off your retail price, without thinking through the implications at SKU level.

Some products can sustain a 40% wholesale margin. Others can't — especially with free shipping and return policies not designed for bulk orders. Before turning on B2B, build a simple margin model: wholesale price minus COGS minus fulfilment cost for a bulk order equals gross profit. Set your wholesale pricing from that model, not from a flat discount off retail.

The operational realities that trip up D2C brands

D2C operations are optimised for single-unit, fast-ship orders. B2B is the opposite: multi-unit, delayed payment terms, potentially freight shipping.

Net payment terms (net 30 or net 60) require that you have the working capital to ship and wait for payment. If your D2C cash flow is tight, adding wholesale with net terms can create a serious cash crunch.

Minimum order quantities (MOQs) are your friend. Without a clear MOQ, you'll get 10-unit wholesale orders that cost more to process than you make on them.

Inventory: the part that breaks quietly if you skip it

The single most common technical failure in a bolted-on B2B setup isn't pricing — it's inventory sync. If wholesale and D2C draw from the same stock pool without a reservation or allocation strategy, a large wholesale order can silently sell out a SKU that your D2C storefront still shows as available, and you find out when a retail customer's order can't be fulfilled.

Shopify's native inventory doesn't automatically separate "committed to a pending wholesale order" from "available to sell" unless you configure it deliberately — either through reserved inventory on draft/unpaid wholesale orders, a dedicated location for wholesale allocation, or a buffer quantity held back from the public storefront. Whichever approach you use, decide it before turning B2B on, not after the first oversell.

Marketing to a wholesale buyer is a different motion entirely

Everything that drives D2C growth — paid social, influencer content, retention email flows — largely doesn't reach a wholesale buyer, who is evaluating your brand as a line item in their own retail business, not as a consumer purchase. The channels that actually work for B2B are closer to traditional sales: trade shows and industry directories, a dedicated wholesale inquiry form that routes to a real person (not a generic contact form), a lookbook or line sheet built for buyers rather than consumers, and outbound outreach to retailers already carrying comparable brands.

Categories with genuine export and wholesale traditions — see our Rugs & Home Textiles and Ethnic & Silk Wear industry pages — often already have this buyer relationship experience from offline trade; the gap is usually translating it into a Shopify-side wholesale portal rather than building buyer trust from scratch.

FAQs

Do I need Shopify Plus to add B2B properly? Native company profiles, custom price lists, and net payment terms are Plus features — below that tier you're working around the limitation with apps or a manual process, which works but doesn't scale as cleanly.

What wholesale discount should I offer? Build a margin model first — wholesale price minus COGS minus bulk fulfilment cost — rather than defaulting to a flat 40% off retail, since not every SKU can sustain that margin once shipping and returns are accounted for.

Should I set a minimum order quantity? Yes, always — without one you'll process 10-unit wholesale orders that cost more in fulfilment labor than the margin they generate.

How do net payment terms affect cash flow? Significantly — net 30 or net 60 means shipping product before getting paid, which can create a real cash crunch if your D2C side is already running tight on working capital.

How do I stop wholesale orders from overselling my D2C stock? Configure inventory allocation deliberately — a reserved quantity, a dedicated wholesale location, or a buffer held back from the public storefront — before launching B2B, not after the first oversell.

Do D2C marketing channels work for finding wholesale buyers? Not really — paid social and influencer content reach consumers, not retail buyers. Trade shows, industry directories, line sheets, and direct outreach to retailers are the channels that actually work for B2B.

Our take

Wholesale demand you're already getting inbound is revenue sitting on the table — but bolting it on without a real pricing model, an inventory allocation plan, and MOQs turns it into a margin leak instead of a growth channel. Build the margin model and the MOQ before you turn anything on, not after your first bulk order arrives.
